Re: Nature Guardian - lessons from NICW

Warmest congratulations on your appointment as Chair of Natural Resources Wales. As the regulator for our environment, NRW plays a pivotal role in safeguarding nature for now and for future generations.

NICW has been piloting an approach to support a closer partnership with nature, namely bringing a Nature Guardian into our governance. This is a recently-established practice which is now spreading across public, private and third sectors.

We started our trial of the Nature Guardian role in June 2025 with the appointment of Elspeth as our first Nature Guardian. We will be publishing a short report to evaluate the lessons from the pilot, and also hosting an event on 22 January 2026 in the Senedd to showcase our learnings and to help other organisations who might be interested in following suit.

We would be grateful if you could consider attending the event; further details will be available once we have them from the Senedd.
